ACTIVITIES
A BDC Master Trainers Training was organized on May 7-13, 2006 in Thailand. The Workshop successfully met the set objectives, the process of implementation of the Business Development Centers was reviewed, participants learned how to use the tools for the Business Development Centers; action plans were prepared to accelerate the implementation of the Business Development Center. The project supported the development of business plan for CULT covering period of 2006 to 2010. The plan reviewed the objectives, functions and sustainability of the center. The plan strengthened its focus on empowering women entrepreneurs who are members of the credit unions. The BDC aims to economically empower women encouraging them to engage in viable and innovative microenterprises. The women will then be ready to take leadership positions in the credit union because of the experience and skills gained from the women’s groups.
Skills development training conducted for women at village level for at least three programs per month every country. BDC’s provided technical support for Entrepreneurship development to women CU members. Between Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Nepal and Thailand a national entrepreneurs networking program started, which included technical support for BDC’s on preparation of business proposals and skills development training on enterprises development.
ACCU organized in September the Regional Women Enterprise Development in Credit Unions workshop in Sri Lanka. The workshop, attended by the women CU leaders in Asian countries, evaluated the achievements in Women Empowerment through Microfinance and assessed the issues remained to focus on in the program for 2007.
In Sri Lanka 10 business development trainings with 182 participants were conducted, in Nepal a Market Survey on products development and enterprise development was made, bases upon this survey a training was conducted on product diversification. In December 2006 a WECUMI planning and evaluation workshop was conducted and a skill development training.
RESULTS
In Total 24.512 new women members in four countries were recruited, 154 credit unions participated in the project, the plan was 6.000 new members in 100 CU’s. In the three training programs 120 women trainers in four countries were trained, the plan was to train 75 master trainers. In Total four BDCs in four countries were set up. The Total mobilized savings at the end of 2006 was US$ 259.071 (45-50 primary credit unions), an average of US$ 17,3 per member, the targeted minimum of US$ 20 accumulated savings was not reached but much more than the planned savings of US$ 80.000. CU’s in the project granted loan of US$ 273.460 to 4.937 members, the plan was to have a loan outstanding of US$ 240.000 to 4.000 borrowers December 31st 2006. The project increased participation of poor members and contributed to gender balance at village level credit unions.
The investments made by Agriterra in the WECUMI project were very fruitful, the results were much better than expected. ACCU proves to carry out projects highly efficient and cost effective. (...less...) |
