BL.

ACTIVITIES
The 470 members of the Farmers Service Centre Balakot were heavily affected by the devastating earthquake on October 8, 2005. Members of Z-LTO wanted to support their fellow farmers in Pakistan who suffered a lot from the damage caused by the earthquake and decided to send a donation of Euro 10.000 mainly to purchase a new tractor and attributes. After receiving the money, FSC Balakot has purchased initially a tractor, cultivator and front blade in November 2006. However, it was realized that a trolley was urgently needed in order to remove the debris from the farmlands. As there was a balance budget, the trolley was bought in February 2007.
The remaining budget of about Euro 700 will be used for a revolving fund among the members of FSC Balakot and for contingencies. All equipment is legal property of FSC Balakot.
Land leveling and removal of debris started in March 2007. Maize sowing will start in June 2007.
RESULTS
In March and April the FSC obtained a net income of about €175 from utilization of the machinery by its members. This income will be used as a revolving fund for FSC members to purchase agricultural inputs such as seed and fertilizers.
At institutional/organizational level the donation by Z-LTO has resulted in the reactivation of the FSC Balakot. The members were called for meetings, the Executive Body of FSC held several meetings with the Agricultural Department Manshera and linkages have been established with two projects supporting FSC at institutional level. The membership has increased from 470 to 520 members (membership fee is about € 7).
The executive body is now having regular monthly meetings.
FSC Balakot concludes that the financial support of Z-LTO has helped the farmers a lot in cleaning, levelling and preparing their agricultural lands for crop cultivation after the earthquake. It has also helped in the strengthening of FSC like interaction with each other and reinitiating of meetings, increased membership, establishing linkages with government departments and other service providers.
The main challenge to be faced by FSC in the future is how to sustain provision of quality inputs on payment to the farmers in the area where they are already receiving inputs free of cost from other International organizations working for humanitarian purpose. The farmer’s prioritizations are being changed from livelihood to housing and reconstruction which is a fact as they have lost their infrastructures. Lands are degraded or washed. To address these challenges, there is need to have a strong coordination with all organizations working in the affected area. Quality inputs from FSC can be channeled through these organizations to farmers. An orientation regarding FSC to all organizations is also suggested. This could be a step to help FSC in provision of machinery from other INGOs. Ultimately land leveling and provision of inputs through FSC is one of the sustainability steps.
