| final results & observations |
Aim of the project was to reinforce the institutional development and expansion of Farmer and Nature Net (FNN) in order to effectively represent the interest of small farmers, provide leadership and capacity building support of its members. FNN implemented most activities as planned. The membership has grown from 950 (2006) village based farmers organizations with 27.500 (2006) members to 1.140 (2007) VFOs or 30.176 members, of which 53% women. This is a growth of 20% in VFOs and 10% increase in individual members.
FNN started restructuring the organisation from a two tiered to a four tiered structure anticipating the expected political administration reform in 2009, when district and provincial level administrations will be set up. Local cluster networks were established which will form the bases for provincial committees in 2008.
At national level, FNN has established new national networks like women network and young farmers network, in additional to the already existing organic rice producers group network and the village based shop cooperative network. These networks are gradually growing. FNN has become a member of AFA (international level). FNN is still strongly depending upon and influenced by CEDAC (Agricultural research institute).
Women participation at activity level is about 58%. Women involved in decision making is about 29%, women leadership at village level is about 4%.
It was worthwhile to support FNN as they managed to expand the membership, create interest networks and strengthen the organisation. They are in process of creating more national level networks under the umbrella of FNN. This allows good interaction and experience sharing about specific topics or among specific member groups (social and business networks).
In the future FNN will focus more on its internal organisational structure and become independent of CEDAC. Therefore, they will develop a strategic plan in 2008 to support this process, including financial projections. Moreover, the provincial level structure becomes operational in 2008. There shall be a focus on the expansion of specialised networks and formation of cooperatives. FNN Committee Members will put more effort in explaining what FNN stands for, especially at the grass root level
