The main objective of the project is to promote micro-enterprise development for individual women and women’s groups. There are seventeen (17) base organizations in seventeen provinces that will be involved in the project. The primary beneficiaries are rural women, they number around six thousand (6,000) households or one thousand two hundred (1,200) individuals.
Studies have shown that women have limited access to agricultural support services such as farm inputs, credit, training, technology, infrastructure, support for marketing and transport of agricultural produce, and others. The disadvantaged status of women, marginalization, subordination and inability to fully take part in the development process, remains a major challenge in the agrarian reform effort.
The Lakambini essentially proposes to use three interrelated strategies of micro-enterprise technical assistance, financial services and policy advocacy that specifically targeted to individual women or women’s groups. For this proposal, the main components are the (1) Marketing and Training Assistance and (2) Policy Advocacy integrated with a (3) Mentorship Programme. (...less...) |

In general, the period covered January – August 2007 the targeted activities and deliverables were successfully implemented, despite the budget constraints and the impact of the termination of the project in the middle of 2007. The activities undertaken all contribute to the realization of the project’s objective of promoting rural women’s development through the Micro-enterprise development programme. The participatory and gender sensitive processes of the project allowed women members and leaders to rethink, discuss and identify issues that impede development of their organization and their communities as a whole.
Most important results
On Organizational Strengthening
Most POs assisted through the project have formalized their structures and are in the process of establishing their legal identities by securing accreditation from the Government authorized commissions. These efforts for legalization were found to be one of the major prerequisites in establishing partnership with Government institutions and accessing support from the latter.
On Economic Initiatives
Through the surfaced result of the training needs analysis during the Regional Meetings, the in-depth training on Marketing and Marketing Feasibility Analysis has encouraged more women/ local organizations to focus more on the viability of their businesses/ enterprises.
From the conducted National Trainings participants have gained increased knowledge of their locality and its market in relation to their business ideas. (...less...) |
