| final results & observations |
The aim of the Federation of Farmers Associations Andhra Pradesh was to further strengthen FFA-AP in being an independent farmers organisation; improved agricultural production and better economic conditions for farmers.
It has taken up initiatives in developing the farmers into knowledge workers through capacity building efforts and helping them with income generating activities.
FFA-AP has realised many of the planned activities. Women are now seen as integral part of the target group of FFA-AP and specific activities have been designed,. This includes the establishment of 150 vermi-compost units for women and a separate project for women (project 4961). In the 14 districts where FFA-AP is active, an institutional base for farming communities was established being transparent and accountable to the farmers. With Coca Cola a effective partnership was established on mangos, and with some public organisations and agricultural technical institutions partnerships were established. Lobbying and advocacy at state and national level has resulted into a bonus payment for paddy crop and a better price for mango. Farmers have been trained on various agricultural techniques in order to increase their knowledge level.
Membership registration database developed and actual membership numbers are provided: 1550 farmers associations are member, representing 64.212 farmers of which 8.432 women (13%).
Some of the main constraints FFA-AP faced, was the political atmosphere at local level, but FFA-AP is able to overcome this issue and the coordinators gradually gain trust of the farmers.
Women participation is still low but with the enhanced attention for gender issues in FFA-AP, more attention is being paid to the needs of women. This takes time as women are shy and less literate compared to men. A separate project was launched specifically for women (project 4961).
It has been worthwhile to invest in this project. FFA-AP is a true farmers organisation and works hard to improve the livelihood of farmers by lobbying and advocacy, training and awareness programmes on agricultural as well as organisational topics. FFA-AP is willing to focus more on the improvement of the position of rural women within FFA-AP. The beginning has been made this year, and in the future gender equality within the organisation and better outreach to women will be high on the agenda.
In the coming years FFA-AP will focus on improving its monitoring and reporting system as quantitative data (i.e. registration of participants) are lacking and the report provides very general information. FFA-AP will work on a strategic plan in order to have a longer term vision that will support them in achieving their longer term planned goals and ambitions.
