With this project specifically aiming at the empowerment of rural women, FFA-AP trained 5.145 women in tailoring techniques. A total of 50 training centres were established in 15 districts of Andhra Pradesh. The tailoring activities are an entry activity to achieve the higher goal of social mobilization of women and women empowerment. Tailoring has the keen interest of women as tailoring is booming business in India (at industrial level, garments industry). The primary objective is to enable women to earn some income from tailoring activities. The secondary (higher) objective to establish social forums where women can freely discuss their issues and problems and also enhance other skills, enabling them to improve their livelihood.
Tailoring results: So far the trained women have not been able to increase their income , as they need to further refine their skills. Some women have taken loans from local banks under the government support SHG programme and purchased their own sewing machine. Some of the women make cloth for household members/repairing old cloths.
Social forum: women have been exposed to books and leaf lets on women rights. Discussions were held about education and various aspects of healthcare, being facilitated by the instructors and field coordinators with the support of local experts. In each centre a book-bank was established with simple readable books about subjects relevant for women like: women rights, children’s rights, child care, agriculture, health and hygiene, saving and credit etc. Young literate girls read the books to all.
Impact: FFA-AP has managed to bring the women together and make them sit and discuss their problems. Now they feel more free to discuss their issues and they feel more united. There is a huge demand to FFA-AP to establish these centres, and to continue the technical training to refine their skills. The higher objective can not be reached in one year but a good start was made with this project.
FFA-AP has decided that they want to establish a women wing within FFA-AP to be able to better address the needs of rural women.
It was worthwhile to invest in this project. This was only the beginning of starting specific activities for rural women in Andhra Pradesh. Social mobilization and women empowerment needs much more time. It is expected to continue this process in the future.
