Zadruga Vocar, an agricultural cooperative in the north-east of Bosnia-Herzegovina, wants to assist their member farmers and members of the sister organisations Zadruga Prunus and the womens association Anima to improve the horticultural production and the marketing conditions in general. Final objective is to improve the income and living conditions of farmers. A complementary objective is to unite Bosnian and Serb people.
In order to realise this improvement, Zadruga will engage an horticultural specialist who will have to render services to the farmers, like advise and guidance. The specialist will work on a part-time basis for 80 hours a month. The demanded support is the cost of this specialist, it is budgeted at 19.200 euro’s per year.
The benefitting farmers will increasingly contribute, as well as Zadruga Vocar.

This project is aiming on improving the technical aspects of horticultural chain development in Bosnia and Herzegovina, for the members of agricultural cooperatives Vocar and Prunus and the organization of women Anima, being a total of around 2000 farmers. The basic goal of this project is to increase revenue and improve the living conditions of agricultural producers. A technical engineer is employed as a field advisor by Zadruga Vocar and his main task is to provide technical support, both practical and theoretical, to member farmers. Focus was mostly on the primary production improvement this year.
Practical education in the summer-autumn focussed mostly on cucumber, vegetables (including introduction of new vegetables), fruit and berry fruit, and greenhouses. In winter, more time was devoted to theoretical education in terms of presentations and meetings with primary agricultural producers. In addition the advisor was also asked to be in contact with farmers to build and strengthen their organisational capacities, to strengthen the farming association, which will actively cooperate with AC ''Voćar'' Glumina. The advisor took active part in organizing the production and purchase, and also join activities related to market and marketing.
New technologies and improved technologies are explained and practically shown to the farmers in their own field. This practical and on the spot approach works very convincing for farmers (seeing is believing). An example for cucumber cultivation:
The program for protecting plants from diseases and pests has been practically demonstrated for cucumber gherkins, with several new/improved technologies. The yield was significantly higher and farmers. In addition, in theoretical classes in 22 municipalities, farmers were educated about the importance of crop rotation, basic autumn and winter tillage, fertilization with organic nutrients such as beef, poultry manure and soil liming. Several farmers showed commitment to use the improved technology to increase production in 2010.
The different ways in terms of production technology were presented and the cost of production with and without subsidies. It was observed that producers are often not familiar with this production and that there is a need for continuous monitoring and training during all phases of cucumber gherkins growing.
It can be concluded that this kind of technical support encompassing both practical and theoretical classes and constant backstopping in the field is very useful for farmers to improve their production. This stimulates farmers to continue and improve farming as they see the immediate positive results. Thanks to the demonstration plots at the area of some municipalities, it is noticeable commitment of cucumber gherkins producers to provide their plots with irrigation systems in the coming year and to raise the rank of cucumber. In terms of efficient organization and realization of vegetables production in the open field, it sets the idea to intensify vegetable production on larger land areas, but using modern principles of breeding.
The activities for the coming year will be based mostly on making books, publications and brochures related to the vegetables production in greenhouses.

The farmers’ cooperative Zadruga Vocar is located in north-east Bosnie. During the war of the nineties most of the properties of the farmers in the area were destroyed, and many of them had to refuge. Most of them returned after 2001.
In 2002, farmers raised Zadruga Vocar. The mission of this organisation is to unite people (Bosnians and Serves) and to represent their interests. The objective is to deliver services (advises and information) and means to farmers. The past years have proven that the organisation was successful, this was proven by the increased production quantities and the quality of the products. The organisation delivered services for dairy milk production, horticulture and fruit growing.
At present there is a need to improve the services for horticulture growers. Horticultural production is increasing but the farmers are lacking knowledge and information.
ZZ Vocar wants to engage an horticultural specialist who can deliver these services. ZZ Vocar does not have at this moment the funds to finance the costs of the specialist and had demanded the financial assistance of Agriterra. ZZ Vocar has proposed the following finance schedule:
Total costs per year are (present level): 19.200 Euro.
Salary: 12 months x 80 hours/month x 15 euro/hour = 14.400
Transport/car: 12 x 300/month = 3.600
Office: 12 x 100/month = 1.200
Total: = 19.200 / year.
