| Proposal The Specific Union of Women farmers, registered and recommended member of the Jordan Farmers Union, fights for rights and better position of women and girls in rural communities in Jordan. The Specific Union aims at variation in income sources, empowerment of rural girls through education, and at raising women awareness. Ultimate aim is to raise living standards of families, which affects the whole society positively. The Union appeals to all to work side by side on several aspects to solve the problems encountered. Developing women in rural communities is basic. It is part and parcel of comprehensive development of the community itself. Problem Rural communities in Jarash and Ajloun areas suffer from low living standards, poverty, and unemployment, lack of public awareness. Women’s position is neglected in society, as they suffer from unequal chances as compared to men. This is between rural women and men; and the same applies to rural women versus urban women. Project objective The Union aims to improve economic position of rural women and girls in the targeted areas and empower them by building capacity. Expected results - Raised living standards for rural communities in Jarash and Ajloun areas - Increased rate of educated girls in the two areas - Women enabled to provide for their needs themselves independently, thus reflecting their abilities and interaction in society - Women enabled to make decisions and to participate in local policies Proposed activities The Union wants to deploy activities : 1 training and experience sharing on essential skills and capacities: lectures a/o in secondary schools, training sessions, workshops, shows and a conference (15.500 dinar) 2 media campaign including radio, newspapers, posters and brochures (1.500 dinar) 3 educational loans to rural girls for university studies to create opportunities equal to males (loans of 500 dinar/month, total 12.000 dinar) 4 turning loans/rotating fund for women to establish their own productive project for income generation (23 specific projects 500-1.000 dinar per loan and 9 (unspecified) of 1.500 dinar; total 42.000 dinar) All activities will be performed by members of the Union. Most are qualified and trained and they deliver voluntary work. Each woman obtains a loan to establish her own project raising living standard and interaction in society. The same women will be trained in essential skills for empowerment. This is a strong double-track approach. For the training and media campaign, there is need for tools and equipments like transport means, training halls, computers, data show, copying posters and specialist trainers. The Union will apply the ‘turning loans’ and from the monthly payments it will finance new projects and release new loans. This system will guarantee sustainability (see M&E below). The ‘turning loans’ cover rural activities, which are partly agricultural : beekeeping, food manufacturing, home gardens, medical plants, cows and sheep raising, wells/cisterns and land conservation. Monitoring and evaluation An administrative committee oversees the project. The committee consists of 7 members elected by the local boards of 7 women agricultural societies, representing 400 women. Oversight committees monitor the activities of the project using performance indicators of activities by which also success stories can be harvested. An evaluator committee evaluates each training session and workshop, as well as loans projects. An evaluation form enables participants to feedback learning experience to the benefit of subsequent activities. The Union gives proof of capacity for administering loans, which they have been doing in period 2006-2008 : loan contract template, loan payback registration, performance measurement sheet (in Arab and English). Location The full project is intended to last one year. The project starts at Ajloun and Jarash areas in the north, considered as poorest areas where women's roles in society are the most neglected. The project concept can expand to areas Irbid and Mafraq and, finally, the Union intends to cover all rural communities in Jordan. In the scope beyond this project period, the Union wants to support exchange between women from rural areas in Jordan as well surrounding countries : exchange of experiences and facilitation of communication. Budget and funding The budget is neatly presented and adds up to 62.000 dinar, equalling 57.200 euro. Out of this only € 16.150 is eligible for funding. (Nevertheless the project merits a full description.) Agriterra is presumably the sole prospect donor approached since March 2009 (to be confirmed). There is no own contribution included. |
