(1) Admas Farmers Cooperatives Union is a cooperative union, which is active in oilseeds. Admas was established in May 2003 by seven primary cooperatives in order to store, transport and market their productions as well as to enforce necessary bargaining power towards the market. During these five years, the number of primary cooperatives has increased to forty-nine cooperatives and the number of individual members increased from 2,388 in 2003, to 15,863 in 2009. About 6% of these members are women. Since August 2009, Admas is a prospect of Agriterra.

Oilseeds are one of the most important agricultural commodities widely grown in Ethiopia. Production growth and quality improvement of oilseeds can substantially contribute to the economic development at national, regional and at family level.

Currently the main bottlenecks identified in production of oil seeds are:
• Lack of awareness on good agricultural practices
• Shortage of improved oilseeds
• Lack of awareness about the local and international market demand for oil seeds
• Low productivity and poor quality product
• Inadequate financial capacity to train producers

Therefore Admas would like to establish a permanent training unit within the union. The training unit and the below objectives will be realised in 3 years.

(2) Overall objectives are:

• Creating a permanent training unit in the union, in order to upgrade a long lasting knowledge and skill of the union management & members in their agricultural development and business activities
• Provision of training to extension workers who are closely working with farmers in their day to day farming activities
• Provide training to farmers in the member woredas (districts) on good agricultural practices , quality management , post harvesting handling of oil seed crops production and management with the objective of improving production and income of the trained farmers by 33.33%.

With this program, it is believed that there will be an increase in productivity of 37% compared to 2009.

In detail, the specific needs for these three cooperative unions in 2010 are:

1. Basic capacities development
2. Tailored advise

Ad 1. Basic capacities and development
The training consists of:
a. Training financial management
b. Training on entrepreneurship and business planning

The above mentioned capacities development trainings have as a concrete output a high quality business plan.

Ad. 2 Tailored advise
Tailored advise consists of:
a. Training of expert (facilitator)
b. Training of extension worker on ToT (Training of trainers)
Note: SNV Ethiopia is a partner in this project and will take care of the trainings.

(3) The total budget for the 3 years plan is 59.691 Euro. The costs in year 3 will be totally covered by Admas. In 2010 the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs will fund the requested contribution whereas in 2011, Agriterra will support Admas.

(4) Systematic and participatory M&E will be conducted based on a model developed by SNV.

(5) Sustainability of the project will be realized by an expert who will be responsible to facilitate and coordinate the training activities in collaboration with the other stakeholders & staff of the union. The training unit will be fully financed by Admas from the 3rd year onwards by allocating budget from the revenues obtained from its business activities (i.e. import & supply agricultural inputs and purchasing and processing of agricultural commodities for local consumption and export).
