(1) This project focuses on capacity building of farmers in order to increase productivity and improve the quality of the oilseeds production, in the intervention areas of the union. Oilseeds are one of the most important agricultural commodities widely grown in Ethiopia with much potential. Production growth and quality improvement of oilseeds can substantially contribute to the economic development at national, regional and at family level. Productivity per ha can be doubled with building the capacity of farmers, higher input levels like fertilizer and improved seeds.
Currently, the main bottlenecks identified in production of oil seeds are:

• Lack of awareness on good agricultural practices
• Shortage of improved oilseeds
• Lack of awareness about the local and international market demand for oil seeds
• Low productivity and poor quality product
• Inadequate financial capacity to train producers

(2) Overall objectives of the project

• Creating a permanent training unit in the union, in order to upgrade long lasting knowledge and skills of the union management & members in their agricultural development and business activities
• Provision of training to extension workers who are closely working with farmers in their day to day farming activities
• Provide training to farmers in the member woredas (districts) on good agricultural practices, quality management, post harvesting handling of oil seed crops production and management with objective of improving production and income of trained farmers by 33.33%. After the training, the yield of Niger seed per hectare of land is expected to reach 8 quintals from its current position of 6 quintals per hectare.

Main activities
• Formation of a training unit in the union
• Organize an office with the necessary furniture’s
• Recruitment of an expert (coordinator) for various training programs
• Training of the expert (coordinator) with courses like (project management, financial and human resource management, monitoring and evaluation etc.)
• Training of 85 extension workers in 9 woredas (districts) at 65 kebeles (farmers association).
• Training of 1,300 farmers.

Besides training on good agricultural practices, the staff and board members of the union will also be trained. The trainings consists of:

1. Basic capacities development
2. Technical training on agricultural practices.

Expected outcomes and/or impact
• Establishment of a permanent training unit in the union
• Farmers capacity on proper way of production of oil seeds improved
• The yield of Niger seed per hectare will reach to 8 quintals per hectare from its current position of 6 quintals.
• Create awareness about the economic importance of oil seeds
• Linkage between farmers, extension workers and the union strengthen.
• Market linkage facilitated
(3) Tentative budget for 3 years is € 60.795. The budget for year 1 is € 36.677. This includes the costs for the employment of an expert who will be responsible to facilitate and coordinate the training activities. In addition, this includes costs for training of the trainers and farmers and for the set up of the training centre. Both the Finnish government as Buno Bedele and SNV will fund the project in year 1. In year 2 50% of the budget will be covered by Agriterra and 50% by Buno Bedele. As off year 3, Buno Bedele will cover the costs for 100%.
(4) Systematic and participatory M&E will be in place in which there will be a follow up of farmers through direct interview and field observation of SNV. Beside, the clients will submit a report for both SNV and Agriterra immediately after completion of the training. Impact assessment will be carried out at the end of the year (after one harvest) with concerned stakeholders and partner organization.
(5) In terms of sustainability, by employing a permanent expert, the objective is to integrate training to farmers as part of the day to day activity of the union. Also in terms of the future potential of the oilseeds and the number of famer members, it is expected that the set up of this business unit will contribute to the improvement of living standards of the members.
